Festivity Has No Language or Community Barrier

Dictionary meaning for festivity is Any Joyous Diversion in short Celebration.

Festivals were and are created by human beings for togetherness and for having fun after hard work. One can list down the different festivals celebrated down the ages and the list can be never ending.

Jallikattu is an ancient sporting event of the Tamils which takes place during the Pongal festive season. (Photo: AP Photo/M. Lakshman):CBS News.

Pongal / Sankranthi : Farmers festival in South India during the harvest season with a dedication to Sun (Suriya Pongal) and animals (Mattu Pongal) who help grow their crops. Pongal (sweet rice) is also the main dish made during this festival.

There is a bonfire called Bogi; significance is to burn the old, not just the materials but all ill thoughts to be burnt.

Lori : Festival of North India celebrated during the same time of Pongal. This marks the end of winter and the harvest of crops. Fun frolic and famous delicacies such as Makke di roti and sarson da saag are prepared during this festival.

There is also a bonfire to celebrate and have fun at the time of dinner.

How different is Lori and Pongal?

Both are the same festivals in different languages. Celebrated for the same reasons; end of a season, dedication to sun, harvest of crops and get-togethers.

They are celebrated at the same time 13/14th of every January.

Festivity is celebration for all ages. Meeting friends and family and celebration is known to be followed in all festivals.

Today, in the midst of busy schedules, we hardly find time to meet and talk to friends and relatives. Meeting has reduced to SMS/Emails and the world is shrinking with technology in place.

With regard to festivals, language was never a barrier, nor was the depth and meaning of the festival celebrated.
